ANT-294 French Mermaid Candelabrum
Solid brass french bronze candelabrum Circa 1890. Completely cast
with polished and contrasting blacken elements make these candle wall sconces a thing of beauty.
The theme is Winged Mermaids (Sirens) that have excellent casting execution and presence.
Here is a bit of mythology: The Sirens of Greek mythology are sometimes portrayed in folklore as fully aquatic and mermaid-like; the facts that in Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, Romanian and Portuguese the word for mermaid is respectively Sirena, Sirene, Sirena, Syrena, Sirena and Sereia. In Greek mythology the Sirens were the companions of young Persephone and were given wings by Demeter to search for Persephone after she was abducted by Hades. Their song is continually calling on Persephone. The term "siren song" refers to an appeal that is hard to resist.
Sirens lost their wings due to the pique of the Muses after the Muses had been challenged and lost a singing contest to the Sirens.
Measurements: Overall height (w/o candles) is 16 1/2' Overall width is 7 1/2” Project into the room 9 1/4”. The backplate is shield shaped and is 5 1/2” at it’s widest point.
