ANT-1270 Art Deco 5-Shade Clam Shell Chandelier by Mid-West
Art Deco Mid-West Art Deco Polychrome design five shade Chandelier with great Clam Shell Shades from the 1930's.
Mid-West was an outstanding company that survived the Depression that took many out. They had a standard that they never lowered and the resulting work shows just that. They were clever too. They used this “clam shell” shade for two totally different lines. The first line catered to curvilinear lines and motifs and often used the popular polychrome designs with a base of subdued yellow complete with touches of Deco reds and greens...as this chandelier so amply demonstrates. The more severe second line embraced the Art Deco Streamline movement (courtesy of the Kelly Art Deco Lighting Museum.)
The “bowl” has rather outstanding original colors that are still in pretty fair condition. Of course, there are rub marks here and there as with any antique...but very minor in the overall scheme of things. The ceiling canopy is a bit darker than the bowl with some staining and thin paint. Definely gives the “aged” look. While this chandelier does show it’s age and the upper section does have that “worn look”, it will appeal to folks who like their antiques to have THAT look.
The shades are simply fantastic. No damage at all except for one shade with a bit of paint flaking (see picture) and otherwise have extremely rich colors. This paint could be touched up, or left aged...a choice for the new owner. This light has a drop of 26" and a diameter of 18 1/2”.
The chandelier was totally re-wired, in our UL shop, with new sockets and new lead wires.
Each slip shade socket can easily take a 100 watt bulb. We are also supplying the mounting bracket (crossbar) for this chandelier, so literally, you can hang this light and have it working minutes after receiving it. A really nice light for an antiquer who appreciates the “aged” look.
