ANT-1064 Pair of Interesting Art Deco Slip-Shade Sconces by Markel
These sconces, Circa 1933 (by catalog dating), was inspired by the French Directorie Period. These sconces were part of their 4500 line which was the only sconce in this series.
An interesting part of this line was that it really started in the 1920s as a “Bare Bulb” lighting series using the same basic chandelier castings, and then, evolved into the slip shade Art Deco era with changes to an already striking formal line and the creation of this sconce to hold a slip shade.
Totally original. Original polychrome painting over cast iron frames...they have touches of silver accents as can be seen. The shades too, are painted and original. A more formal deco presentation. While there are some chips in the paint...can be seen in the pictures...they have not been touched up...or fooled-with in any way. We are seeing original except for the re-wiring.
Markel was one of the biggest companies working in the Great Depression and had locations in America and Canada and Austrailia. They made a lot of the antique slip shade fixtures that can be found in antique shops today. They were a quality company.
The shades are simply a treat and are in good condition. We have re-wired these neat sconces in our UL shop complete with rotary switches on each one. We are showing one frame, without the shade, to show the very nice decorative elements of these sconces.
