Sold in polished brass, or hand-finished "antique" darkened tones. Antiqued finishes are lacquered to preserve their tone.
Similar, larger door plates are sold with either a fancy top detail design, or a rectangle with scrolled edges all around. The Victorian homeowner would often put the larger door plate on the side that faced the public, and the rosette on the "private" side of the door.
